fit perez Your New Celebrity Trainer: Perez Hilton

Health Habits is waving the white flag of surrender.

Because today, I learned that Celebrity Trainer to the Stars Perez Hilton has launched his own health / fitness / weight loss / celebrity gossip website – FitPerez.com

And just how is tiny little Health Habits supposed to compete against Perez and his vast knowledge of health & fitness?

    I’m screwed.

    And it’s not just me.

After speaking with Drs Oz, Mercola & Weil, all three have confirmed to me that they will also be shutting down their practices, their websites and their tv shows.

It’s like when WalMart opens a store in a little town and all of the local stores end up out of business.

You can’t compete against WalMart & you can’t compete against uber-Fitness Guru Perez Hilton.

    .

    sigh.

What Does Your Health Club Do For You?

    By , October 11, 2010

globogym What Does Your Health Club Do For You?

What does your health club (or personal trainer, or iphone app, or online fitness community, or fitness magazine, etc) do for you?

If your club is like my club, then they….

    • provide fitness equipment and space to exercise
    • offer the advice of their in-house fitness professionals
    • blend up the latest in post-workout nutrition
    • schedule fitness classes at convenient times
    • bring in guest speakers to increase your fitness IQ

And, if they do all that, then you’re getting top notch health club service.

So, why is it that after I read this article from marketing guru Seth Godin, I got the feeling that today’s health club industry is doomed for extinction?

    Or hopefully…evolution.

    Question(s)

Why is it that over 70% of all new health club members stop coming to the gym within 3 months?

And why is it that most of the remaining 30% don’t look much better than we they first joined?

And why is it that today’s health & fitness industry doesn’t seem to care?

    The Answer?

Because the current health & fitness industry is still focused on delivering products and services instead of solutions.

Think about it – most people go to a health club to burn off some fat & to get fit.

How they do it is irrelevant.

Or at least it should be.

The goal is what matters……and the health club (or personal trainer, or iphone app, or online fitness community, or fitness magazine, etc) than can shift their focus toward the goals of their clients and away from the latest fitness trend becomes indispensable to their clients.

And in my opinion, this style of thinking is a big part of the reason why Crossfit has become a major player in the health & fitness industry.

They provide results better than anyone else.

Can drinking milk help you peel off the pounds?

dairy.jpgDo dairy products promote weight loss? That's certainly the implication of a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Researchers from Ben Gurion University in Israel followed dieters on a variety of regimens (low fat, low carb, and Mediterranean) for two years. Regardless of which diet they were on, those who ate two or more servings of dairy per day lost almost twice as much weight as those who managed only half a serving a day.

This isn't the first study to link dairy consumption with weight loss. But researchers still can't say for sure what it is about dairy products that might help take the weight off. Is it the calcium? Is it the vitamin D that's added to milk? Or is it just that people who drink more dairy products tend to have other habits that promote weight loss? More on SELF.com: Reach your weight loss goal!

There are a lot of people who, for a variety of reasons, choose not to drink milk. For their sakes, it would be really helpful to know whether a non-dairy alternative (such as a calcium and D-fortified soy- or nut-milk) might offer the same benefits.

The Other Side of the Story

Because the dairy industry makes sure that these pro-dairy studies get a lot of play in the media, I wanted to offer at least one counterpoint: Researchers from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Nutrition recently reviewed 49 clinical trials that looked at the relationship between dairy intake and body weight.  Of those 49 trials, only five found that dairy enhanced weight loss.  Forty-one of them found no benefit whatsoever. Dairy products do not consistently lead to enhanced weight loss or healthier body weights.

Here's my takeaway for dieters--both those who enjoy dairy and those who prefer to avoid it.

    1. Avoid empty calories, especially sweetened beverages. 2. Make sure you're getting enough calcium and vitamin D 3. Include protein in your meals and snacks.

The way I see it, including a couple of servings of dairy in your day is one way--but not the only way--to do it.
